World Summit 2009 Presenters: David Y. Lee

DAVID Y. LEE                                                         Creative Director, The Waiting List

David Lee finished his photo internship at U.S. News and World Report in the fall of 2003 and began his freelance photography career covering the 2004 Presidential campaign for Time and Newsweek. David continues to freelance, with bases in both Washington DC and Raleigh, NC; his clients include Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, Rolling Stone, and the Public Welfare Foundation. In October 2007, the U.S. Department of State contracted David as Secretary Condoleezza Rice's official photographer to document her international legacy during her final fifteen months in office.

In 2006, David and two colleagues produced a multimedia project - Yearbook 2006 - which documented the interrupted senior year of the class of 2006 from Benjamin Franklin High School in post-Katrina New Orleans. The project was a featured presentation at the 2006 Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration "Spirit of Recovery" Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana. In March 2008, David and two colleagues launched an online photo project, ten:15, which invites people from around the world to share a photograph taken at 10:15 AM their local time, every day.

Currently, David is working on a new personal project -- THE WAITING LIST, which shares the stories of those waiting, those touched by, and those involved in the organ transplant process, with the ultimate mission of inspiring individuals to register as organ donors. Their story about Celeste Castillo Lee, who has been waiting for a kidney transplant since February 10, 1992, won first place in the shorts category at the Donate Life Hollywood film festival. Recently THE WAITING LIST has launched a new campaign -- Yes! I am an Organ Donor. By re-focusing the attention to those who have already made the decision to say, "Yes! I am an Organ Donor," THE WAITING LIST believes we can help encourage those who are hesitant on registering YES by demonstrating other people's commitment to organ donation. The tentative launch date for the project is April 2010, during National Donate Life month.
